Responsibilities
The County Assessor of Lawrence County is responsible for the discovery, listing, and valuation of all taxable property within the county, including both real property (land and buildings) and personal property (vehicles, equipment, etc.). The Assessor ensures that property assessments are conducted fairly, equitably, and in accordance with Arkansas state law, providing the foundation for the local property tax system.
Key duties of the Assessor include:
- Maintaining up-to-date records of property ownership, characteristics, and classifications
- Assessing the value of all real estate as of January 1 each year
- Assessing personal property annually for individuals and businesses between January 1 and May 31
- Administering homestead tax credit applications for eligible property owners
- Preparing and certifying the county’s assessment rolls for submission to the County Clerk and the State of Arkansas
- Working with the County Equalization Board to resolve appeals and ensure uniform assessments
- Submitting new construction and reappraisal data in compliance with reappraisal cycles mandated by the Arkansas Assessment Coordination Division
While the Assessor does not levy taxes or collect them, the accuracy and completeness of assessments are critical to the distribution of the tax burden and the generation of revenue for schools, cities, the county, and other local districts.
