Responsibilities

The Circuit Clerk of Lawrence County serves as both the clerk of the Circuit Court and the official recorder of real property records for the county. This dual role requires a combination of administrative, judicial, and recordkeeping duties, all of which are essential to the functioning of the county’s legal and property systems.

As Clerk of the Circuit Court, the Circuit Clerk is responsible for:

  • Filing, indexing, and maintaining all legal documents related to civil, criminal, juvenile, and domestic relations cases
  • Issuing summonses, subpoenas, and court orders
  • Collecting court costs, fines, fees, and child support payments
  • Maintaining court dockets and records for judges and attorneys
  • Handling appeals to higher courts
  • Assisting self-represented litigants with access to court forms and procedural resources

As Ex-Officio Recorder, the Circuit Clerk is responsible for:

  • Recording and preserving documents related to real estate and personal property, including deeds, mortgages, liens, easements, leases, plats, powers of attorney, and court judgments
  • Maintaining and indexing notary bonds, military discharge papers (DD-214s), and other official records
  • Ensuring public access to land records and court files while preserving the integrity of those records

The Circuit Clerk’s office serves the public, attorneys, judges, and other officials with professionalism, accuracy, and a commitment to transparency.
